SUMMARY:Memory and Media in the 21st Century: Psychological and Sociocultur
 al Perspectives
DESCRIPTION:Media shape our memories. This is not a new phenomenon. Humans
have created external records to support remembering for thousands of years
, ranging from cave paintings to archives, monuments, bodily practices, and
printed books. Sometimes, media are used by individuals who try to documen
t and remember their lives (e.g., by writing a diary or creating a photo al
bum); sometimes, media are used by groups and societies who want to preserv
e and to form collective memories (e.g., about historical events) and colle
ctive identities. In this regard, literature, film, and visual art, address
ing different age groups (children, young adults, and adults), are particul
arly important. There is a variety of interactions and transitions between
different media as well as between individual and sociocultural memories. A
lthough established media formats and cultural institutions continue to pla
y an important role with respect to individual as well as collective memori
es, the transformations of the digital age have created new possibilities b
ut also new challenges. For instance, people living in the 21st century ten
d to preserve much more information about their private and professional li
ves than previous generations. In a similar vein, social and new visual med
ia may have a profound impact on the way collective memories are created, t
old, and remembered. Many important questions regarding the role of media f
or memory and remembering in the 21st century remain unanswered. To explore
the current state-of-the-art and to sketch avenues for future inquiry, the
interdisciplinary workshop will bring together psychological and sociocult
 ural perspectives.
